The following images have been magnified by a factor of 2 to show the individual pixels. Scaling dithered images by certain factors introduce numerous artifacts, so it is essential to apply dithering after image resizing.ĭithering results are best rendered when the image is displayed or printed using small pixels. The following methods have been implemented (there are several more): Floyd-Steinberg, Atkinson, Jarvis-Judice-Ninke, Stucki, Bayer_2x2, Bayer_4x4, Bayer_8x8, Clustered_4x4 and Random. Restarting Fiji or ImageJ will show a new command called “/plugins/dithering”. InstallationĬopy the source code below and save it into a file called “Dithering_.txt” somewhere in the /Plugins folder. In the case of 24 bit RGB images the macro lets you either apply dithering to the greyscale version of the image or to each of the RGB channels (colour dithering). This is ideal for rendering images in devices with a binary output such as printers (greyscale) or with a small number of colours (colour dithering). Dithering is a type of half tone thresholding where greyscale (or RGB channel) intensity is converted into a local density of binary pixels. I had newest mac os Big Sur on both devices so its not a OS problem. This macro takes an 8 bit greyscale or a 24 bit RGB image and performs dithering using one of the methods supported. Its definitely a problem of the newer mac / display. ![]() Even when put iphone at same distance than macbook display with same text size. When i use my iphone 7 plus display to read my eyes immediately relax again. Its like eyes cannot focus and brain cannot process the information on screen. I got the exact same problem after upgrading to my new MacBook Air M1 2020 from my old Macbook 12 2016. Thanks! Hopefully we can figure out a solution for this together soon! These suggestions did not solve the problem, although changing the scaling made me a bit more comfortable to use the screen - but still it is not optimal and the strain/fatigue effects are still there. I contacted Apple support, and they said we can't disable temporal dithering, but they suggested changing the scaling of the display and the color profile. I did my research and a few people blamed temporal dithering of being the culprit. My struggle with this new screen was to the extent that after using the computer for ~4 hours, it felt like I could see but my mind could no longer properly process what I was seeing! I got really scared because it felt like I was blind while I could actually see (really hard to explain). iPad Air 2, iMac 2017, Sony Xperia phone.etc) don't cause me issues. No other device has ever caused me similar issues, and even now other devices (e.g. I got terrible eye strain and headaches from using the computer for a few hours. I only started having problems when I recently got the new 13" 2020 MacBook Pro (Intel Iris Plus Graphics). I am a longtime user of screens, primarily Apple products. So please do so as well through this link: Īsk Apple to offer an accessibility option to disable temporal dithering.ĥ- do you have any resources for this (is it really temporal dithering? other potential culprits?.) I will frequently update this thread with resources and interesting finds.Īpple support advised me to leave feedback. The purpose of this post is to raise awareness, help each other, and unify our voice regarding the (alleged) adverse health effects of temporal dithering.
